Looks like you have a binary (weird unprintable characters) file.
vi tells you there is one line, 2227 characters long.

What does "file g2filter" tell you? If it's a binary or data you won't be able to do much with it in VI.

Before you do this, follow the advice above and make sure you have a text file.
If you do have a text file, and are having the same issue with other text files, then do:
Code:
 echo $TERM

that'll show you what terminal setting you have. If it returns nothing, or something weird, then try
Code:
 TERM=vt100; export TERM

You also may want to check any entries in .exrc, if you have that file.

Before I delete any file in Unix, How can I check no open file handle is pointing to that file?

I know how to check if any file has a unix process using a file by looking at 'lsof <fullpath/filename>' command. I think using lsof is very expensive.
