Making a mail server

I am attemping to create my own mail server. I was told to use postfix, but from my google searches it seems that there is a lot more than just configuring postfix which I have done. Is this true? If so, I was wondering if anyone could let me know what else I need to install.

Also, how do I go about actually sending an email out through postfix.

I am new to unix, so I appreciate all your help.
