Question smtp question
When I establish a connection to port 25 (the mail port), I was unable to send an email when I typed:

rcpt to: username

I didn't know the exact username(s) on that machine. My question is, how do you find out who's logged in that machine or what user names have accounts on it that I can send mail to? Any kind of help is greatly appreciated!

Well, you could try the finger command, if the remote server allows it (this is becoming less and less common, so don't be surprised if it doesn't work).

If that doesn't work, you can also try the VRFY and EXPN commands...

vrfy livinfree

(note: the expn (expand) command will tell you not only if the account exists, but also will show the names associated with a list, or if the user is using an alias, it may show thier true user ID - who the mail is really going to...)

Once again though, it doesn't always work:
