Question smtp question

When I establish a connection to port 25 (the mail port), I was unable to send an email when I typed:

rcpt to: username

I didn't know the exact username(s) on that machine. My question is, how do you find out who's logged in that machine or what user names have accounts on it that I can send mail to? Any kind of help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Well, you could try the finger command, if the remote server allows it (this is becoming less and less common, so don't be surprised if it doesn't work).
Code:
$ finger livinfree@myserver.example.com
Login: livinfree                             Name: Living Free
Directory: /home/livinfree            Shell: /bin/bash
Office:                                          Home Phone:
Never logged in.
New mail received Sat Oct 27 00:00 2001 (/etc/localtime)
     Unread since Thu Oct 18 04:35 2001 (/etc/localtime)
Plan:

If that doesn't work, you can also try the VRFY and EXPN commands...

Code:
$nc mail2.example.com

220 mail2.example.com ESMTP Sendmail 8.9.3 (PHNE_18546)/8.8.6; Thu, 1 Nov 2001 23:33:25 -0800 (PST)
vrfy livinfree
250 Living Free < livinfree@examle.com >
expn mikea
250 Living Free < livinfree@examle.com >
quit
221 mail2.example.com closing connection

(note: the expn (expand) command will tell you not only if the account exists, but also will show the names associated with a list, or if the user is using an alias, it may show thier true user ID - who the mail is really going to...)

Once again though, it doesn't always work:

Code:
$ nc mail1.example.com 25

220 mail1.example.com ESMTP server (InterMail vM.4.01.03.27 201-229-121-127-20010626) ready Fri, 2 Nov 2001 07:31:29 +0000
vrfy livinfree
502 Command is locally disabled

Hope this helps a little...
