I have solaris 6/SunOs 5.6. It works for me with sh and ksh. It fails with csh as it will with any csh anywhere.

If Sun really made a change like that to sh and ksh they are in violation of posix standards.

"> file" should work in any bourne or korn shell and it must work in any posix compliant shell.

This is cool. So I can use it in place of 'touch' as well...saves me keystrokes.

Runs fine in AIX4.3. Good finding.

giannicello,

You cannot use this in place of "touch".
"> somefile"
..will truncate the file. "touch" simply updates the
file's access and modification times. The contents of the
file remains.

Moral of the story.... use this with caution. Smilie

How are these two different? They both prevent output and error from being displayed. I don't see the use of the "&" echo "hello" > /dev/null 2>&1 echo "hello" > /dev/null 2>1 (3 Replies)

>/dev/null

Maybe it's an stupid question but remeber... I'm Junior.. I use command line to run programs, and some of them gives a lot of information when, for example, you open a window or other actions. That's really bad because my terminal gets full of unwanted messages, so I use "bin file & >/dev/null"... (1 Reply)
