Question Want URGENT Advice:Career as UNIX Systme Administrator

Dear All,
I have finished my MS in chemical engineering from US university and presetly on OPT work permit.
I do not have software background.
I have received call from consultant company.
They are offering me AIX UNIX training for four weeks and find me a job.
My question is how difficuilt that will be for me,since I will be starting from scratch..I just know how to take printout and send email from unix terminal..thats it.
Will it be good choice to take step in IT field..
Please advice.
Desi students/professionals you might understand my situation better..
looking forward to hear from you.
Thanks.

Sounds like a scam to me.

I agree it sounds awfully suspicious. No reputable consulting firm would offer something like that. At best they are a "body shop" that will throw you into a job opening and take their fee, then you'll be on your own to make it work. And with no unix background and only 4 weeks of training I find that pretty unlikely no matter how smart and well educated you are. Unless it's an entry-level job like helpdesk, but I don't see how they'd offer you 4 weeks of training for a entry level job like that.

I would recommend avoiding this. I know tons of people (including myself) with M.S. or Ph.D. degrees in sciences that ended up as I.T. workers so the career path isn't the problem. This particular proposal is the problem. It seems very likely to not be in your best interest.

I assume you are from India and I think you are aware of the competetion in IT in your part of the world. Its very difficult to survive with IT career without any solid background. And you should also be aware that as Chemical Engineer you have a very good future ahead, so I'll suggest you to focus on your career as Chemical Engineer since you have done your hardwork in this field, suppose you go for this offered job, what will happen after 2, 3 years, will you still be able to get a job as Chemical Engineer in the market? You have more chances to get job as fresh graduate not as a hybrid professional.

Regards,
Tayyab

Here...

Well, don't be scared, first. AIX is easy to manage system as it has a great deal of good tools and perfect documentation. It is possible to start to manage the AIX system with one week training. You will not be the most knowledgeable person around indeed but it is possible. In fact the standard training for beginner AIX administrator is a 4 days schedule.
If you completely new to UNIX and need a jump start, take "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD and do not be scared by opportunities. Absolutely most of consults had started this way. If you are a quick learner and ready to sit extra time by studying the system you will be just fine in couple of months.
