Hi All,
how to view and extract specific files from a tar archieve file?

To view the files in a tar, just type tar tvf <tar filename>. For example:

tar tvf my.tar

To extract a specific file type:

tar xvf my.tar <file_to_extract>

for example:

tar xvf my.tar test.txt

You can extract multiple files at once by doing this:

tar xvf my.tar test1.txt test2.txt test3.txt

Hope this helps.

What's up TioTony! Smilie

Just to add to that... when you do a tar tvf on the tar file pay attention to the paths that may have been included within the tar. Sometimes tar xvf <tarfile> filename may not find anything. I've seen tar files created with ./filename for all files in the tarball. In this case, you'd have to use "tar xvf tarball.tar ./myfile" or something like that.
