I saved a perl code in xemacs. I used an xterminal to execute it but unix said that I don't have permission. I saved the files in my home directory. How do I change the permission. This is hat unix said:

-ksh: ./names.pl: cannot execute [Permission denied]

In the directory where the script is located type this:
chmod 777 names.pl

This will allow you and anybody else to read, write and execute it.

Im on a administrated account and when i type,
Code:
chmod 777 Applications

after typing cd / of course. It says operation not permitted??? Whats that mean, i thought the point of chmod was to bypass admin privlages. any ideas?

Er, no. what chmod does, is change permissions. Try 'ls -ld filename' on the directory to see what ownership and permission it has.

The most likely reason for this is because your Applications directory mounted read-only or is NFS mounted from another system. That being the case, it is normal on the NFS server to disable root permissions for root users on the client machines which mount the shared directory.

i know you can use mount -uaw in SUM can i do the same in Terminal to dedit the read only folder?

My /tmp is set with the following permissions (777) and a 't' at the end. My umask is set to 022. When I create a directory under /tmp (tmp/xx) it gets created as 755 as expected. Yet when I create a file within that directory (/tmp/xx/yy) the permissions are not 755 they are 644. ... (1 Reply)
