UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Is anyone using a cable modem with unix and if so does your cable co. support unix or did you get that going on your own and how.

Most companies wont officially support Unix. Its usually easy to get up and going. Just plug in the modem to your network card, use ifconfig or a dhcp client to setup your networking info and you are all set...

Thank you for your post. I ended up getting red hat linux thinking that linux was a type of unix I have sence heard different. In any case your solution would work for both unix and linux correct?

I've used several distro of linux(Mandrake, RedHat, Slackware), FreeBSD and OpenBSD on my cable modem, it's not really an issue of cable modem just configure a network card, if the address is dynamic then in case of linux you just have to "pump -i <network interface>", if not, just configure you network interface like regular one does regularly.

I would like to connect to my internet provider, also.

I've installed FreeBSD (unix), and I am using a "cable" modem (my provider is Cox RoadRunner, in case this makes any difference) .

All examples that I've found refer to dial-up. I've been all weekend searching for solution to this problem - to no avail.

Could you possibly provide (Or, do you know where I can find) a step-by-step example showing how to connect to an internet provider using a cable modem.

Unfortunately, the information in the book "The Complete FreeBSD" seems to be scattered, and its been difficult (for me) to filter out what I need to create connection and begin surfing, etc.

All I need is an example of the required steps and the required list of configuration files I will have to modify.

If you are using RedHat and the ISP uses DHCP (most do), then all you have to do is run an Ethernet cable from the cable modem to the network card in the box. Then open linuxonf, navigate to the "Host name and IP network devices" tab, then select the Adapter tab. Select Enabled and DHCP. Then acceprt the changes and close linuxconf. When it prompts you to activate the changes, tell it yes. You don't even have to reboot.
