whatever gets return, gets assigned to 'arr[$1]' - associative array 'arr' indexed
by the value of the FIRST input column [array indexed by UID of 'ps -ef']

Ok, still not understanding.

You said:

Quote:
($1 in arr) - if FIRST field is in the array 'arr'
what do you mean "in the array". The first field of the line will be the UID, lets say its 25. Well none of the entries in the array will be "25", the'll be something like:

1589 21174 7594 0 20:28 ? 00:00:00 sleep 4

Although, do you mean does the array "arr" have a key 25 i.e.

arr[25]

In other words are you saying (psudocode):

if(Does exist arr[25])
{
arry[25] += $0
}

else
{
arr[25] = $0
}

I think that you are saying this, and if so is there a way to break down that statement into a few more lines so I can understand better.

Thanks, Chris.

Its ok, i totally understand it now, thank you for all your help. Its a little tricky programming in this single looping manner of awk when youve never done it before.

But actually it will make me think about other non awk programs I write where I might be having too many temp variables because I think it not possible to get the info i need on a single pass.
