How to extract one file from tar file

Hi,
I have a tar file using tar -xvf newfile.tar file 1,2,3... and then I compressed it
So the file name is newfile.tar.Z
Now I want to extract only one file from it, say file2
I tried the following:
1) zcat newfile.tar.Z | tar -xvf - newfile/file2
2) tar -xvf newfile.tar file2 ( after uncompress it)
both of them are not work. The system seems accept the command but just didn't extract out the file.
Did I do something wrong?
Please help

gunzip first

first gunzip that file which has .z extension
i.e.
gunzip newfile.tar.gz

this will give you "newfile.tar"
then

tar -xvf newfile.tar

this should extract the files in the same directory.
