search option

how do i search for a string within a log file, if im using the tail command?? Smilie

grep string filename

if file is really long and may contain more than one entry of the string you are looking for, it may be convenient to say
grep "string" file | less
Less will allow you to browse the strings and if you press "v" it will load it in vi automatically so you can save it if you need. Take "UNIX Essentials and Core" DVD it explains stuff like that.

Hi, I've written a script to search for an Oracle ORA- error on a log file, print that line and the .trc file associated with it as well as the dateline of when I assumed the error occured.
