Since the output from ls will be sorted by name and cut won't change the order of lines in its output, you can use uniq instead of sort -u. On most systems, uniq is smaller and faster than sort for what you are doing here. Depending on how many files you have, you might even get faster response leaving out the uniq or sort step and let mkdir try repeatedly to create some directories it has already created. Unless you have enough files to make xargs invoke mkdir more than once, the cost of invoking another utility (sort or uniq) will be greater than the cost of trying and failing to recreate some directories.
