no problem, and no need to b sorry, this is the way everyone of us have learned things

just tell me what are you trying to achieve,
as per my understanding the following will work
instead

and ur code will work

if u were trying to achieve something else just tell me exactly what you are trying to do with this script

Explore POWER of awk
awk '{ if(NR > 2) exit ;
tmp1=substr($1,1,4); tmp2=substr($1,5,8); tmp3=substr($1,13,6);
print tmp1" "tmp2" "tmp3
} ' d15
# 18

Cut pid from ps using cut command

hay i am trying to get JUST the PID from the ps command. my command line is: ps -ef | grep "mintty" | cut -d' ' -f2 but i get an empty line. i assume that the delimiter is not just one space character, but can't figure out what should i do in order to do that. i know i can use awk or cut...
