Solaris 10 vs. FreeBSD

I'm rather new to UNIX, and am downloading either FreeBSD or Solaris 10. Which one would you reccomend? I'm not running a server or anything here; just doing some C programming, so security isn't the paramount issue here. I'm running on an AMD Athlon 3400+, with a GeForce 6100 for graphics, and two hard drives (each around 100 Gb; one I'm running Windows XP on, the other I plan to install UNIX).

Either OS should be fine as long as it is possible to load it on your system. Check the hardware compatiblity list (HCL ) for each to insure it will load. You can find a link to the Solaris HCL by searching for HCL on this site. Search for freebsd and hardware to find the link or check out the freebsd site.

Also check out the FAQ section and the rules.
