What error are you getting?
Have you replaced "file" with your filename?

Hi,

With above command, the result is unexpected and not accurate..

Code:
sh-3.2$ if [ "`tar -tf myfile.tar 2>&1> /dev/null`" == 0 ]; then echo "YES"; else echo "NO"; fi
NO
sh-3.2$ if [ "`tar -tf myfile.dat 2>&1> /dev/null`" == 0 ]; then echo "YES"; else echo "NO"; fi
NO

Am I missing something?

Please use code tags as required by forum rules!

Apart from syntactical errors, what would you expect for the output of tar -tf myfile.dat? I'd be very surprised if it were "0". You may want to try either
Code:
tar tf myfile.dat; if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then echo "Yes"; else echo "No"; fi

or
Code:
if tar tf myfile.dat; then echo "Yes"; else echo "No"; fi
