sed Or Grep Problem OR Terminal Problem?

I don't know if you guys get this problem sometimes at Terminal but I had been having this problem since yesterday Smilie Maybe I overdid the Terminal. Even the codes that used to work doesn't work anymore.

Here is what 's happening:
* I wanted to remove lines containing digits so I used this command

Code:
sed -e '/[0-9]/d' input999.txt > /path/Output.txt

And the output result was empty.

Inside this it contains lines like these:

Code:
A08
AAG
ABF
ACE
ADD
AEC
AFB
AGA
A80
A89
A98
B0G
BAF
BBE
BCD
BDC
BEB
BFA

* So basically there's only 3 types of digits 0 8 9 numbers

* I tried Gep too. My command was this:

Code:
grep -v "[0-9]" input999.txt > /path/Output.txt

And the out put is still nothing.

Also the command I used to do are not working any more.. It hanged with the line with >

For example when I used this commad and I got this:

Code:
cd .path;for file in *.txt;do grep 'x' "$file"|grep -v 'x.*x' > /output/directory/"$file”;done
>

It just literally stuck there. I tried to reset Terminal with reset but still doesn't work. Is there any way to fix this other than restore or reformat?

What happens if you use [[:digit:]] instead of [0-9] ?

You probably typed in a command with mismatched quotes.

The > at the start of a line is the default secondary prompt in most shells waiting for you to type in the remainder of a command you started on an earlier line.

To break out of it, hold down the control key (labeled "control", "ctl", or "cntl" depending on who manufactured your keyboard) and then hit the "c" key to interrupt your shell and return to your primary prompt.

Hi

Thanks for reply Smilie The ctrl + C really helps. But I still can't manage to remove lines with digits though.

I'd tired [[:digit:]] with sed like this:

sed '/[[:digit:]]/d' input.txt > output.txt and still get empty output.

You say the output is empty. What do you mean? Do you mean that nothing is written to the terminal (which is what you should expect), or do you mean that the command:
Code:
cat output.txt

after you run your sed command completes doesn't print anything but a shell prompt for the next command?

Hi,
If you have names of file with quote, you can to have this problem, example:
Code:
$ touch "XX'YY"
$ ls -l
total 0
-rw-r--r-- 1 XXXXXXXX Domain Users 0 12 févr. 10:06 XX'YY
$ for i in *; do echo $i :done
> ^C
$ for i in *; do echo "$i" :done
>

Sorry, my assertion is false, because my example contains an error:
:done between ;done
And without this error, loop for work fine Smilie

Regards.

Output is empty as in the command is successfully executed and I got the output.txt file. However, the txt file is totally empty. I am pretty sure there are lines without digits. Yes command is complete and doesn't print anything but a shell prompt for the next command

Thank you so much for your replies guys. So if my file contain quotes as mentioned, is there any other way to fix it without removing the quotes??
