You might also try using a prompt generator. this will help you get exactly what you want without having to know all of the code. Another thought is that maybe you have an alias or other environment variable which is throwing off your prompt.

It is interesting to see that resetting PS1 did change your prompt (a colon turned into a space)???

So the problematic <CR> is either in the hostname (as RudiC suggested) or in the last component of the current working directory. (And, the ~ shown in your output seems to be saying that you are in $HOME unless your current directory's name contains a literal ~ character.)

Note to sea: Changing single quotes to double quotes when using the given string shown in this thread will make absolutely no difference other than taking a few more nanoseconds to reset PS1.
