is there any way to check if some ip is taken ?

hello
is there any tool in unix that will indicate if some ip is already taken by other machine?

Many utilities for IP range ping

There are many GUI utilities on the internet that does this. Just search in google for "IP range ping" or something like that. I found this link useful:

i believe pinging is not the right solution to check whether a particular IP has been taken by other machine or not.

threre could be possibility where in the network DHCP is enabled for the nodes under that..

or server can be configured for virutal IP's in which case many IP's can be used by many nodes (..by IP forwarding )

... and individual machine firewalls can return icmp-host-unreachable to pings which looks like the machine is down but the IP is actually assigned and in use.
