running command "top" in cron

hi all,

i would like to collect stat. about the cpu usage every 30 mins
so, I set up the cron job sth like

0,30 * * * * * /usr/bin/top -d 1 >> $STAT

i know cron doesn't have a TERM output, so error occurs.

any ideas or work around for this??

many thanks

Are you using HP top? There are two more options that you should look at. Try using '-n' and '-f'. Set the '-n' parameter to a number more than the number of processes that you will have running on your system at any time.

use sar -u 1 1 instead of top as you may need top -f to write to a file
