Can we build a tool for Windows to retrieve data from UNIX servers (putty console)
Hi Friends,
Is it possible to build a windows tool ( a java applet maybe? ) which can retrieve data and display after performing certain commands on unix servers ( simple grep / script output) after logging into putty console. I am on a company server so please bear that in mind. I might have no permissions installing 3rd party software. I can install freewares like eclipse and also MS Studio is possible.
Also, if it is possible, then how to get started . Is there guides available for this.
You may want to look into java/applet clients that have an ssh library. Putty can do a number of protocols (ssh, telnet,...). I am guessing you are using putty via the ssh protocol to connect to the server. In short, what you will be looking for is a java ssh library or a tool someone already has written. Check out... You can also issue commands using ssh and parse the return; something like....
Not sure I understand what you're about. You are extracting data on a windows PC, which you want to work upon on a *nix server, and then?
Did you consider using *nix "emulations" immediately on windows PCs, like busybox or cygwin?
I think i dint make myself very clear. Actually i work on a windows PC and i occasionally login to putty, then ssh to servers to check for performance logs etc. I want to create a tool which willl have different buttons. If i click one button, it will login to putty, then ssh to the server from there, then fetch performance logs and display it on the Tool screen. Other buttons for other purposes etc. It will make things very easy for me and my team.

Actually i have to login to the putty server first using my credentials. From there, i can ssh to different servers. So i cannot directly use ssh command from Windows.
Is it possible we're talking past each other again? putty is one implementation of the "ssh" protocol (and others) on windows systems, with which you can login to any ssh server within reach. What be a "putty server"? Never heard of (may be my fault, please enlighten me).
What I once did is: within putty on a windows machine, I created several named setups (target server & login script) that allowed users to click that setup to provide that certain service and that other setup for that other service...
Read your putty documentation again. Chapter 9 describes using pagent to supply authentication. Once pagent is running you can do stuff like this:
This means you can write batch files (or powershell or vbscript, etc) that log into a unix system and run a command.

Hi Friends,

This was installed on the Linux box a few weeks back by a guy that no longer works for us. All worked fine until last week. Now when we connect its just a blank screen with no icons.
I get a whole bunch of errors when starting the service too:

I have a .sh script which was running fine on all the UNIX Servers (AIX, SunSolaris). The script requires two mandatory parameters and many optional parameters.
