The tr solution looks cool, unfortunately he/she will need to slap on 7 more bytes onto the solution:

would need to be

LANG=C tr a-l /-:<<<dbcf

Since it depends on a range construct and the collating order may differ depending on locale ...

For example:

$ LANG=nl_NL.ISO8859-1 tr a-l /-:<<<dbcf
4?3:

On OSX anyway.

The more one thinks the more the shell becomes flexible?
This assumes that any previous command works or fails with a single digit error...

Is there any other language as flexible?

You could leave out the $ signs and you could precede it with NOP so that the outcome is guaranteed:

If you precede it with :, you can use the shorter x=$?

My brain isn't fully functioning. If you precede the : with ! and then do that, ... but for a total savings of just 1 byte.

The bash solution given in the problem URL is very impressive. I can't come up with anything as short.
