the "which" command

Hi !
I am using the which command.
#which ifortvars.sh
gives
/usr/local/sw/intel/bin/ifortvars.sh
but
#which cttsetup.csh
gives
no cttsetup.csh in (.....)
This file is in /usr/local/sw/vni/CTT6.0/bin/
I dont understand why it is not locating the file.
I think the "which" command gives the location of a file - Is this it? or is it something else.

Thank you all for the help.

If /usr/local/sw/vni/CTT6.0/bin isn't in your search PATH, then which can't find that file.

"in the search path"

I am sorry I did not get that.
I am at the root. when i executed #which cttsetup.csh.
Moreover even if i am in the same directory as the file
ie i am in /usr/local/sw/vni/CTT6.0/bin/ and execute which cttsetup.csh
it says no cttsetup.csh in (...)

Has this got anything to do with the .bash_profile file? because this cttsetup.csh is a file from a software i have installed recently and i am still having problems using the software.

What does "a file being in the search path" mean? Does path here mean $PATH something i see in the .bash_profile file (or) does this mean that the file just needs to be in one of the sub directories.

Thank You.

When a user (including root) logs into the machine, a series of scripts are excuted automatically. One is /etc/profile, which executes for all users and another is /home/user/.profile or /home/user/.bash_profile.

Anyways in these scripts, you will see a variable being set called $PATH. You'll see something like(for example):

Code:
PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin

If you want cttsetup.csh in your individual PATH, add /usr/local/sw/vni/CTT6.0/bin into your $PATH. If you want everyone to have that PATH, put it in the PATH in /etc/profile.
