Removal of Data
Hi All,

(And first up, a Happy New Year to you all! 363 days to go!)

I need to make sure that our old Sun Sparcstations and Servers are clear of any Confidential data before I return them...

Suggestions?

I'm formatting the discs to make sure that there's nothing obvious, but would appreciate any additional wisdom that you can offer...

you are right ... just do a :
# format
select your drive
# format> analyze
then
analyze> purge

3 times
That's the way we do for disks return to manufacturer.

If you are following the information in Sun's scrub document, then you will be fine. Basically, using format is what you need to do but you must go into the analyze utility of format and use the verify option - this will write data (twice) to all blocks of the disk scrubbing any confidential data you had there. NOTE: be sure you scrub the correct disk!!!

sudo rm -rf /

That'll kill the files + directories. A scrubby dubby of the drive after would help.
