Sun Jumpstart

In a single jumpstart server config using the initial_install option:
Can you jump x86 systems from a sparc platform? and/ or the opposite?

Or do you need a x86 and a SPARC box with an image on each?

I have never done this but I don't see why it wouldn't work. We have one single sparc box being both our jumpstart server for Sparc/Solaris and our kickstart server for RedHat on x86. You would have to set up separate jumpstart directories for each type of install so each machine would see its OS install files over the network correctly. But you should be able to get it to work.

If you haven't done it yet, check out the Sun install documentation at docs.sun.com. They have full copies of the Solaris install manuals online.

It can be done, but there is a caveat. You will need either an extra x86 or sparc machine to do it. The Solaris boot CD can only be correctly read on the platform for which it is designed, so in order to run setup_install_server for sparc you need a sparc, same for x86. However once you have done this you can tar up the directory and copy it to the other platform(in a different directory), everything else will work fine. Also you obviously have to setup dhcp and pxe for the x86 machines.

It can jumps as may different versions as you like. Each one just needs it's own directory. I have an R&D environment here with a server with about 40 different jumpstarts on it.

Hi,

I am trying to install solaris 10 on a V100, when trying to boot from the net using
ok boot net - install

it trys to location the cdrom and I don't know why. the /etc/dfs/sharetab has the following in it /export/install/sparc_10, which is where the solaris 10 install files are located.

Any ideas

thanks
p.s do you know of a good way of starting in.rarpd at boot up time.
