-v sets a variable. RS="<" won't work without the -v in front of it.

Hello,

For some reason your awk statement doesn't work for the below data embedded in a FILE, it doesn't return any data. May i please know what could be the reason??

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
<Provider PROVIDER="6" SCHEMA_VERSION="2.5" xmlns="http://www.abc.gov" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.abc.gov/ abc.xsd http://www.abc.gov http://www.abc.gov" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">

Code:
tr -d '\000' < FILE | awk -v RS="<" -F'"' '/[pP][rR][oO][vV][iI][dD][eE][rR]/ {for(i=1;i++<=NF;)if($i~/[pP][rR][oO][vV][iI][dD][eE][rR]/) print $(i+1) }'

Thank you.

It must be finding the wrong 'provider' label.
Code:
tr -d '\000' < inputfile.xml | awk -v RS="<" -F'"' '/[pP][rR][oO][vV][iI][dD][eE][rR]=/ {for(i=1;i++<=NF;)if($i~[pP][rR][oO][vV][iI][dD][eE][rR]) print $(i+1) }'

no luck/output. initially i got some error and i fixed your statement. But it didn't worked either.

Code:
tr -d '\000' < inputfile.xml | awk -v RS="<" -F'"' '/[pP][rR][oO][vV][iI][dD][eE][rR]=/ {for(i=1;i++<=NF;)if($i~/[pP][rR][oO][vV][iI][dD][eE][rR]=/) print $(i+1) }'

But when i put RS="" i am getting the output, but again its impacting other input xml files printing extra lines.

Code:
http://www.abc.gov
7

Of course it does... it considers the entire line one record...

Try:
Code:
iconv -f utf-16 -t utf-8 test.xml > test_utf8.xml

How about this:

Code:
tr -d '\000' < inputfile.xml | awk -v RS="<" -F'"' '/[pP][rR][oO][vV][iI][dD][eE][rR]=/ {for(i=1;i<=NF; i++)if($i~/[pP][rR][oO][vV][iI][dD][eE][rR]=/) print $(i+1) }'
