I use awk command for some specific cases and I am struck at a point.
I have file which as a delimiter value as ^^
contents of the file as below:
I would like to be able to use a command by which I can find out how many columns are in each line.
i was using
but its not working, how to make it understand that my delimiter is ^^
any help is appreciated,
This could be simple to many, but for me I am struck and need help.

The value to the -F option is treated as a string with escape-sequence processing. So, an extra \ is needed so that escaped circumflexes (^) reach the regex engine.

I have a script problem that I am not able to solve due my very limited understanding of unix/awk.

1) A command line argument to a variable
e.g origCount=ARGV
2) A unix command to a variable

in my awk shell script
