sed -e 's_.*_"&\\r\\n"_g' xyz

I dont know which part of the sed statement you dont understand. So I shall start from the beginning.

Consider this sed -e 's/regexp/replacement/' statement

The underscore's are the delimiters that can be used instead of /. It can be anything you want. You should remember that, once you use a particular delimiter, you should stick with that till the end.

.* refers to eveything that sed has read. In short, the whole line.

&: The replacement may contain the special character & to refer to that portion of the pattern space which matched the regex.

The others are quite simple. \\r. The extra preceding \ is to escape the next character. And g is the global flag, which in this case is not needed.

Hi Vino,

Again i am here for the same problem..As u sugessted it i working only for few files but i found in few lines i am having x8e in the end for that this sed is not working and givng " in three places in a single line like as



I googled for this special character string and found that it should be mapped in some header file.

Can u please let me know how to change my origial solution.

I guess solution is something Mona gave....

Could you provide us with a few lines that do not respond well to the sed statement ?
