That is why I used _ROM_ with underscores...

Plus you CAN remove the internal battery and the external completely and upon every COLD boot just set the clock and use the defaults, (F9?), and restart.

This WILL continue to reboot _correctly_ until power is completely removed from the system, of which case one will have to do the same again... I do it daily with the machine described below running Debian and from its external supply...

My HP dv2036ea has both a dead main battery and _clock_ battery.
This machine, an HP dv6552ea has a dead _clock_ battery... (With _clock_ read backup.)

As for the SW how many of the billions of computers sold have had their BIOS corrupted by GParted?
After all it WAS GParted getting the blame!

BTW since when has UEFI been BIOS?

Some systems use EEPROM instead of battery-backed RAM.

This is all besides the point, however.

An adviser nearby stated: the BIOS is corrupt or fisicaly in failure.
Gentlemen, what are Unix programs for BIOS reflashing? And wherefrom to dowload the .bin file (not Windows .exe, which I got from Toshiba site). This is Toshiba Satellite M40. Thank you in advance.

A "corrupt BIOS" wouldn't boot. At worst yours is misconfigured.

The BIOS usually isn't flashed from inside UNIX, usually done via a standalone boot utility. If all they offer are Windows versions, you may have an adventure trying to extract the relevant files to use with a standalone utility.

You're far more likely to get what you want just altering the BIOS settings. If it's a UEFI machine, sometimes those will refuse to boot from CDROM unless you configure them to be in 'insecure mode'.
