How to find count total number of pattern in a file …?
How to find count total number of pattern in a file …

File contains : a.txt
-------------

Code:
aaa bbb nnn
ccc aaa bbb
aaa ddd aaa
aaa aaa aaa

Code:
grep -c aaa a.txt

Op: 4 ( But my requirement is should count the total no of patterns as 7 )

you could use grep -o and count the results using wc:

grep -o aaa a.txt | wc -l
# 3

awk -F"aaa" '{a=a+(NF-1)}END{print a}' a.txt

# 4

  $p = quotemeta shift 
}
  ++$c while /$p/g;

  ' aaa infile

The above should work even if the pattern contains regex meta-characters.
