Hopefully simple question
When i type cd etc/shadow it says that file or directory doesnt exist? Is there a way to show this or am i typing something wrong? Smilie

You should be typing
Code:
cd /etc

shadow should be a file not a directory

( if you type cd etc, you may also get an error if there is no etc directory under the current working directory. If you are in /, it should work)

I tried that and then i did a ls -a and it didnt show shadow. I also tried to to just cat shadow and that didnt work either.

What OS and version? Check the second field in /etc/passwd for x (which means it will using a shadow file).

osx 10.3.9 i believe and the second field is a * for all of the users. How can i find the shadow field then? Smilie Smilie

The * is where the password lives in the real file. It sounds like you are reading /etc/passwd, not /etc/shadow. There is no "shadow" field.

DO NOT MESS with password files, you can trash the whole system. I'd suggest that you make a really good backup, it sounds like your explorations are going to create the need for one.

osx, according to the man pages I found, doesn't seem to have a shadow file.
