I've just been stupid and managed to lock myself out of vi. I entered in my .profile alias vi=vi | :set showmode. This has causes vi to return the error ":set: not found" when I try to get into vi.

Any suggestions?!

use '/bin/vi' to edit your .profile

mv .profile to .profile.orig

logout
login

vi .profile.orig and comment out /remove the offending line

mv .profile.orgi .profile

logout
login

haha .. sorry, vgersh99's solution is much better ... I wrote the reply then went afk came back and posted before checking the thread.

The simple solution is most often the best :-)
