My guess is that it is configured to use external servers and is hanging waiting for a response. Maybe it will just timeout after a while and prompt you for info. That could take a long while to time out. So I would let it sit for a while and see what happens.
i've tried that as well, the system hangs at ypbind done. i have left it there for about 30 mins now and once in a while, i can hear a bit of activity at the harddisk, but nothing significant happened.

If you don't know the root password, who does? Suppose the box had booted up normally and offered you a login prompt. What would you have done then?

i'm sorry mate, hope that din annoy u. as of now, i really do not know the password. it's because i bought them from another company. the computers came in a box without any documentation or CD. my company intend to use the sunos to run tester softwares inside. i think i'll have to contact the seller and ask them about it. i'm really sorry if i have wasted yr time & effort.

regards.

methinks you'd be better off getting a solaris 8/9 cd and reinstalling the os on the problem box ... there is no use wasting time on trying to figure the box out as you can't get in it to fix it without knowing the passwords set in it ... and solaris 2.6 is quiet old already as it is so it would not be a good test platform anyways ...

btw, i wouldn't bother with the sparc20 as that's quiet obsolete and not supported by sun anymore ...

thank you for yr advice, mate. i would gladly report the news abt the sparc20 to my superior Smilie

as for the problem box, i've managed to get into the software after contacting the seller. the password was nothing! (darn those fellas) i can get into the system now & check out the contents of the hard drive.

one thing that bugs me though, is that do i have to do the "stop-a" everytime i boot the computer? now that i can get into the system, is there anyway where i can change the configuration and make the system to boot up normally without any human intervention?

as for upgrading the OS. i'm afraid i can't. it's because i do not have the tester software inside. i'm worried that if i try to install a new OS inside, i might wipe out the tester software as well. conundrum Smilie
