Split a file and give custom names

Hello,

I want to split a file based on an input list file that contains the lines each split should have + a corresponding file name.

Code:
#!/bin/sh
# sed -n 'start_line_#,end_line_#p' my_input_file > lines_extracted_output_file

while read a b c
do
sed -n '$a,$bp' myLarge.file > $c.split
done < lines.names

exit 0

My lines.names file looks like this:

1 5 cat.txt
6 10 owl.txt
11 15 emu.txt

Thank you for your input!

sh does not expand variables within single quotes.

Also, be aware that when sh parses identifiers (variable names) it will see the longest valid name possible, even if that longest name is unset and there is a shorter match which is set. In cases where the longest match is undesired, curly braces are necessary.

Alister

Expanding on the previous reply, here is what you want:
Code:
while read a b c; do
  sed -n "$a,$b p" myLarge.file > $c.split
done < lines.names
