archiving a directory using tar

How do i archive a directory and subdirectories under it using tar?

tar cvf archivefile.tar file1 file2 subdir1 subdir2

Or if you're talking about the directory and all subdirectories under that particular directory, a simple

tar cf foo.tar /some/dir

Note... if you use absolute paths, you get absolute paths in your archive, which can make restoration tricky....

It's best to use relative paths for most requirements....

cd some; tar cf foo.tar ./dir

man tar for the plethora of available options....
