Could anyone help me with my little annoying problem?
I have to generate a 512 MB file made up with random data using DD. After some internet digging I found out that the command is:
After running this command the shell is not responding anymore, so I have to hit ctrl + z to end the process. Why does it freeze? I need to be able to run ps to see the dd's proces PID because meanwhile the dd is running, I have to check the progress using some strange command:
If u did understend what I am talking about, cuz I am a bit confuse, please help me.
That thread is about files made up with zero. I need one with random data, using random/urandom, but still it helps. thanks

Anyway, could u tell me if it is suppose to freeze? When I execute
the bash freezez and after an certain amout of time it ends. The file is created 512MB, hurray.
But I have to run a signal during the DD process to check the progress. I searched on the internet and I found this signal for checking the progress:
. But how I am supposed to check the DD pid and after to run this signal if the bash freezes after executing the dd line?
Add an ampersand at the end of your command to start it in the background:
then you can use:
to see the progress of the dd command (by checking the size of the file reported by ls).
Hi Guys and gals...
As you know I am getting to grips with POSIX and hit this stumbling block.
Generating two random numbers 0 to 255 POSIXly. Speed in not important hence the 'sleep 1' command.
I have done a demo that works, but it sure is ugly! Is there a better way?

Hi,
How can I generate a string of random characters (alpha+numeric) of a particular length ?
For e.g. for
n=5, output = 'kasjf'
n=10, output = 'hedbcd902k'
Also, please let me know if random (valid) dates could also be generated.
Thanks (7 Replies)

Need to use dd to generate a large file from a sample file of random data. This is because I don't have /dev/urandom.
I create a named pipe then:
dd if=mynamed.fifo do=myfile.fifo bs=1024 count=1024
but when I cat a file to the fifo that's 1024 random bytes:
cat randomfile.txt >... (7 Replies)
Im new to C, and Im having a hard time getting a random number.
In bash, I would do something similar to the following to get a random number;
#!/bin/bash
seed1=$RANDOM
seed2=$RANDOM
seed3=$RANDOM
SEED=`expr $seed1 * $seed2 / $seed3`
echo ${SEED%.*}

Hi,

So I have a file that looks like this:

Hi I want to genrate 10 random 32 bit binary numbers with hamming distance 4 and 8.
11010110010101010101010101010101
11010110010101010100010101010010
if we look carefully at these two binary numbers they differ at 4 places hence hamming distance 4. Now I want to genrate these numbers... (2 Replies)
