UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I am taking an intro to unix class and I can not figure out how to do part of the question. I am writing script to be exictued by a program in the tutoral.
Question:
Write every line containing the word ``delete'' produced by ``man mail'' into a file called ``delete''. Hint: What does using ``>'' do, as opposed to ``|''?

I have tried:
grep "delete" man mail > delete

the program returns that it was not right because delete contains the wrong output.

If anyone has any suggestion I could try I would appreciate it.

operator '>' connects a program to a file, whicle '|' connect a program to another program (by making first one's stdout as second's stdin). this command should do what you're trying:

man mail | grep "delete" > delete

what happens is, man echoes the contents of corresponding manual page to stdout. executed with no input files, grep expects input from stdin (usually keyboard, but in this case, because of the pipe character '|', stdin is "man mail"'s stdout). then grep's output is directed to the file named delete.
