Sendmail mailertable help

Hello, all.

I have two entries in a mailertable:
Code:
domain1.com                     esmtp:[hostinny.mydomain.com]
domain2.com                     esmtp:[hostinny.mydomain.com]

After I made the entries I did makemap hash /etc/mail/mailertable.db < /etc/mail/mailertable and restarted sendmail. One domain uses the smarthost and the other entry doesn't. I've swapped them in the mailertable and tried again. I tried changing line to smtp:[<ipaddress>]. I'm trying has worked yet. Is there some setting or config that supersedes the mailertable and makes sendmail use DNS instead?

I'll look at anything you can suggest. Thanks in advance for your help!

Smilie

I wasn't sure what information was relevant and not wanting to take too long I left something out that turned out to be the culprit. I had created a sym link:
Code:
/etc/mail -> /nfsMount/Storage/etc/mail.

That would have been fine, but the export for the sendmail servers was NFS read-only. The idea was to have a horizontally scalable group of sendmail servers each with literally the same config files on nfs. And I would have gotten away with it, if it hadn't been for those damn kids.

It looks like if the mount is RW it works properly. Why does sendmail want write access to files that it doesn't seem to ever change during normal operations? Can it be tweaked to not need that?

Oh! One more thing that helped me troubleshoot this problem:
Code:
sendmail -bv <someguy@somedomain.com>

I'm sure the sendmail monks know this, but it tells you how sendmail will make a relaying selection for that address based on your config (DNS vs smarthost in my case).

Nowhere near enough information to guess this one, but is does not appear to be a unix or Linux problem.
Suggest you post this on Open Source - Sendmail.com and don't forget to mention what Operating System and version you have and what Version of Sendmail you are running.
