telnet echoing 'trying ip' but no port number

Hi,
Well this is probably a silly one that I should know...but I don't !
I'm telnetting to various ports from a shell script and the telnet is echoing back that it's 'trying xxx.xx.xx.xx...' but not the port number it's trying!

Any help much appreciated

Thanks

I don't think the standards require it.

RFC 854 does not seem to mention asking telnet to echo what port it is connecting to.
Please verify here:

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc854.txt

telent implementations often have extra added non-standard features, check your man page.

you could do something kludg-ey like this:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
echo -n "Using port 4567 "  && telnet 12.12.12.12 4567
