output and execute

hi,

does this mean that the output will go to a file named $3 with an x in the end, and then it will be executed?

grep $1 filename > $3x
chmod a+x $3x
$3x

thanks

yes.

although if inside a script the $ in $3 will not be interpreted literally - $3 would be the third positional parameter passed.

If used outside the script (and no set -- blah stuff has been executed) and $3 was not set, the file would simply be called "x"

Also, when executing, if "." is not in your path, you'll need to state
./$3x

</pedant>

Cheers
ZB
