how to search the pattern

hi all,

I would like to how do a find a pattern in a file,

like in sql we have % sign to search for the string pattern,

for eg to search for name starting with "A", i can use like 'A%'

pls help

Listing for filenames starting with A

Code:
ls A*

Using find

Code:
find /path/to/dir -name 'A*'

vino
# 3  
Old 06-30-2005
also for in a file

grep A* FOO.EXTENSION

eg:

grep Big*Iguanas .csh
grep A* Alphabet.doc

etc

you may also want to 'pipe' some things to more if it has many matches, eg:

grep A* Alphabet.doc | more
find . -name "A*" (with the find, . represents which directory to start from, . means current directory)
