What does ssh | grep $ do?

Hi,

Am trying to debug a script and came across the line below:

Code:
/usr/bin/ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=yes -o NumberOfPasswordPrompts=0 os_oper@bkupserver01 storageproxy mnl001 snap list | grep $ | grep vol_pr01

Am just confused/curious about what the grep $ does? Can anyone explain that please.

Thanks in advance.

$ is meta-character to match the empty string at the end of a line. so i do not see grep $ doing anything -- it would just pass the stream on to the next grep..

Someone must have left that there by accident, maybe it used to be grep $VARIABLENAME or the like.
