file.z

Hi,
I have a file which is appearently ziped and it's name is myfile.z.
then to use it ( extraction ) I type :
tar xvf myfile.z
But I receive :
tar: directory checksum error
Why ? What should be the solution ? Many thanks.

Possibly it could be corrupted.

But anyway, try this

tar tvf myfile.z and it would atleast the test the individual files. If it encounters any corrupt file, it will tell you so.

if the file has a .Z extension then it is more likely than not compressed using the compress command.

In that case the command to use would be:
uncompress myfile.Z

It also could have been created using another program like gzip. If the above suggestions fail and gunzip is on your system, try it as well.

The file myfile.z is definately compressed by some program.

To find out which program has compressed it, use the file command.

Syntax : file <filename>

This will tell u in which format the current file is. After seeing the output, use the appropriate application to decompress it.
