UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi!!

This forum been very helpful in my earlier issues. I hope i'll get the resolution this time too.

My query (might seem very silly) is:

I am using following code snippet to find the lines matching to certain string.
....
....
var=`cat temp.txt`
echo $var
for line_read in `echo $var`
do
echo $line_read
done
....
....

"echo $var" returns:

1,aaa bbb ccc,100
2,ddd aaa d,100
3,qweqwe dgfhfg dfsadfa,100

now the conflict comes in obtaing valu in $line_read:
1,aaa
bbb
ccc,100
2,ddd
aaa
d,100
3,qweqwe
dgfhfg
dfsadfa,100

This means, in for loop, each line(including white spaces) is broken with every white space instead of '\n' (!!!!)

Please, help me with proper logic. Its urgent...

Have you tried doing it this way, i have had some issues in the past trying to do this also and found this way just as effective.

cat temp.txt | while read line
do
echo $line
done

P

That would be a UUOC

while read line
echo $line
done < tmp.txt

would be the preferred methos of doing this.
