Username creation
Hi,

There was a problem when creating a username. which was to be mapped in nis. but we encountered a problem and decided to delete the username. So instead of using the userdel command we acidentally deleted the username entry in the passwd file, which does not have backup. So upon recreating the username, a message is displayed that username already exists. So how do we delete the respective entries and recreate this username.

Please advice.

What is the OS and version? Is it NIS or NIS+?

You state you deleted the username from the passwd file but you didn't mention if you deleted it from the shadow file - that may be why the system is stating the username still exist.
