1.
I can ping the box
but "pinging out" dosen't work....

it either hangs (against a GOOD ip address) - with no "reply from... " scrolling etc.
or
comes back straight away with an ERROR - if BAD ip address.

2.
NFS mounted?
...er...dunno what you are talking about!

marty,

have you checked the permissions on directories and on /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow if used?

I had a situation once where my / dir parms where changed accidentally and no one could login. Also, check the readability of /home and /etc/passwd.

Also, if your system uses /etc/profile make sure it is at least 444.

check and see if you have an /usr/newconfig/etc directory or something similar. Sometimes there are bare copies of /etc/passwd in there.

You might have to run find to get it.

find /usr -name "*passwd*"

OR in /etc somewhere...

... make sure your default gateway address is correct as well as recheck the other networking settings ... if other boxes can ping your box then your box is on the network ... your box not being able to ping out is telling me that your network packets are not getting to where they shold be going ... in my experience, this is most likely a default gateway setting problem ...

Ahh didnt see that part about pinging... could be a DNS issue. I had a user the other day who couldt get to a certain box... but someone next to her on a different domain could.

Traceroute is your friend... from your host to the client.

Computer

Hiya Guys,

Worked out why it did this....

Something to do with AUTHENTICATION GUI

I ticked everything - eg. LDAP, WINBIND....etc... whilst trying to get my blasted FTP to work.... thats when this problem started

Unticked the lot (ie back to std) - hey presto - works!

Cheers
MArtin
