installation on extra HD

List members:

I have an extra HD in my early 2009 Intel Mac running OS 10.7.3 and Windows. Both of the latter systems have their own HD's devoted to them.
On this extra HD I'd like to install Free BSD or any other version of Unix that is close to the version on which Apple bases its operation system.

I would appreciate any help with the installation process. Are there CD's available that might facilitate installation? Or is there a better way to do things?
I frankly do not understand some of the more technical pages I see, and would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you for any help.
