Question Practice using Unix and lack of knowledge

So I have a Networking class at my university that involves learning the basic commands of unix (i.e. Chmod, cat, cp, ls, mv, rm, mkdir, rmdir, pwd, etc) and my professor had us download and install Solaris and PuTTY as a means of...I suppose practicing using/executing commands. However due to reasons unknown to me, we've never got around to using it, it's a half-semester class, and I have no idea how to use Solaris nor how to practice using what little Unix commands I know. Is there a downloadable Unix program to practice basic commands or is there a way I can use Solaris to do so?

Download ISO from Oracle's website, then install it in VirtualBox.

Well, I have Solaris10_8 and I've installed the ISO but...I'm at some sort of screen asking me for a Host Name.

Or does it matter what I put down?

This is the first configuration screen. It will also ask you for network configuration and some other things. What you put there will be used later by the system.

Does it matter what I use? Like for the IP information should I put something specific like my own or...(Extremely new to all of this)

Play around with it. In worst case scenario you will have to reinstall Smilie But whatever you will put there, you will be able to try the commands in console window in VirtualBox. VirtualBox also has nice feature called "snapshots", which allows you to save the state of the system before you do anything to it, so in case something goes wrong you can just restore last snapshot and start over - without reinstalling anything.

as an advice after you succesfully installed in the virtualbox export it as single file with extension of OVA just incase you missed up something in the OS without using snapshot and you dont need to reinstall from the scract just import it back to the virtual box..

I addition during installation, Write out or plans first whats your hostname, ip etc..so that its easy during installation..
