I would download magic ISO, and oracle's virtual box. After that get the ISO of your choosing for your linux OS. I chose fedora16. load the ISO to your magicISO drive and create a new machine in virtual box. for the host name you can call it something like yourname.fedora16...it really doesnt matter. follow standard installation features and properly assign storage space to your / /swap /boot /var etc. i would reccomend going with a minimal install with basic applications and a simple command line interface, no GUI. After you have installed properly go back to virtual box and click on your new machine then choose settings and be sure to change the boot load options to hard drive by unchecking floppy and cd. If you need more info let us know. I can give a detailed install for your partitions and apps etc.
