I don't understand the difference between your method and using -R .
Both will do the same right!?

Imho there is never a reason to set any file to permissions 777 . It is a security nightmare.

To make a script available to all, owner "root" and permissions 755 is much safer. Many sites will only allow 750 and control access with group membership.

I would never issue "chmod -R" ever. Much too easy to wreck your system.

I'd use "find" to produce a checkable list first, then consider whether to change the permissions of all files in that list.
