Also, I could use grep to match the lines after some point, but have told by few now that grep is not the command to use in this case usually.

Only some versions of grep can do that. You can't include logical statements about when to do that either, since grep isn't a full-fledged language -- all it understands is regular expressions. awk is a full language, however.
